Fruits
of the Grocery Produce Aisle

Your job is to make a systematic study of two supermarkets. The instructions for report follow. The report is worth 40 pts and all materials (digital and hardcopy) are due Thursday, Apr 1 at the begining of lecture (late reports deducted 10% per 24 hr period late).
Part One: Fruit Diversity Comparison (20 pts).
Make a comparison of two supermarkets of your choosing in terms of the diversity of different fruits offered in their produce isle.
Comparison will involve counting the following:
1. Number of different types of fruits (e.g., even though various forms of squash or avocados may be the same species, count each as a separate variety).
2. Number of different plant species represented.
3. Number of different plant genera represented.
4. Number of different plant families represented.
Use the attached spreadsheet as a sample spreadsheet in which to record your data: sample-fruit.xls.
5. Then write a one-page report comparing fruit diversity at the two supermarkets/grocery stores. Summarize results as a table and bar graph, attached to the report. Hand in hardcopy, as well as send electronic report and your data spreadsheet to me via email.
Part Two: Fruit Report (20 pts).
Write a three- to five-page report (double-spaced, with 1-inch margins, 12 pt font) on one particular fruit you find. Include the following elements (and label as such, but excluding the point values):

How to cite these:
When citing these articles in your report, cite as follows:
“The starfruit (Xxxx xxxxx) is native to the Central American countries of Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Nicaragua (Anonymous 2010a). According to Smith and Jones (2004), starfruit cultivation spread during the twentieth century to countries of the Old World Tropics such as Ghana, Ivory Coast, Indonesia, and tropical Australia. Interestingly, despite its being native to Central America, starfruit today is only a minor crop in its native countries and the World’s largest producer of the fruit is Ivory Coast (Anonymous 2010b, Roberts 2003). “
